Just about four fifth of all German sociologists with a doctoral degree belong to this organization. Membership is open to all persons who have demonstrated sociological competence, be it through their research, their achievements in teaching, or their publications. As a rule competence is demonstrated by having a doctoral degree in sociology. The GSA was founded in 1909. Sociological confer-ences were already conducted on a regular basis during the Weimar Republic. Dur-ing the Nazi period activities came to an abrupt end. In 1946 the DGS was revived again. Since than it has grown from a small club of eminent scholars into a large academic organization. Since the first sociological congress, which met in 1910 in Frankfurt, 32 further congresses have been held. Concerns, specific to the period, determined the atmosphere of these congresses. Strong contradictions emerged during the 1968 student revolt. Throughout its entire existence the association has attempted to further with vigor the consolidation of sociology in teaching and re-search. Even today this constitutes the main concern of the association. The mem-bers have formulated for themselves a code of ethics. This code provides guidelines for more integrity within the sociological profession. The organizational tasks of the DGS are performed by the president, the executive and by special research sec-tions. The council constitutes the parliamentary control mechanism.
