Special Issue Covid-19 di Fuori Luogo: Global risks and social distance at the time of the epidemic and pandemic events

The recent outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) that is affecting most part of the world pushes sociology to rethink social change phenomena. The network society has accelerated in a short period of time the speed of spreading risks and disasters, such that the dawn of the twenty-first century was marked by global crises with new features in the history of mankind: the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the tsunami in the Indian Ocean of 2004, the economic recession of the years 2007-2013 up to the three major health outbreaks (“SARS” 2003, mainland China, “Swine flu” 2009, Mexico and USA, “MERS” 2012, Saudi Arabia and 2015 South Korea). The COVID19 pandemic surprised states, populations and political decision-makers, all unprepared to face an emergency that in a very short time has blocked the economy, suspended the social exchange, highlighted social inequalities, forced to social distance and, consequently, to a more widespread use of digital communication technologies.
This special Call for papers “Global risk and social distance at the time of the epidemic and pandemic events – Covid-19” contains contributions that offer sociological insights and reflections on the analysis of risks and social disasters in terms of management, resilience and elaboration of policies and system actions internationally, nationally or locally in 21st century society.
We are issuing this call for papers, asking for reflective contributions on the impact of COVID-19 (in particular but not exclusively), and the changes we may expect to see going forward this social disaster. As a sociological journal, our consideration is not about medical developments or treatments, but rather the social and cultural implications of such unprecedented moments as those we are living.
We are interested in receiving both empirical research – such as may be conducted in these times – and (shorter) theoretical and critical commentaries about long-term – and present – implications of this social disaster. Submissions may come from any social science or humanities discipline, and we welcome interdisciplinary reflections.
Papers, in English or Italian, should be submitted to the journal section ‘Global risk and social distance at the time of the epidemic and pandemic events – Covid-19’. You may submit either a full-length research article (up to 8000 words, excluding references) or a shorter commentary piece (max 4000 words, including references).

Communication and mass media in risk and disaster information;
Data, big data and research methods at the time of the disaster;
Distance and social solidarity;
Political management of emergencies and disasters;
Social innovation and new start-ups after the disaster;
Predictive analysis and disaster management;
Daily life and gender differences during the pandemic;
Technology and social distance;
Mobility and post-disaster tourism;
From overtourism to undertourism: how tourism will change after the pandemic;
Risks, disaster and community tourism;
Language and disasters…
Deadlines
1) Abstracts are due by April 26, 2020. All abstracts (500 to 750 words, with 5 keywords in English) should be sent as e-mail attachments (Word Format) to: redazione@fuoriluogo.info
Abstracts should align with the objectives of the Journal, and clearly demonstrate to take much interest in epidemics and pandemics events, systemic risks and social disasters in the last 20 years.
2) Decisions concerning the selection of articles will be announced by May 2 2020.
3) First versions of articles to be refereed are to be submitted by July 3, 2020 following the “Instructions for paper submission”.
4) Communication from the Editors concerning the peer-review process will be notified to Authors by July 18, 2020.
5) Revised versions will have to be sent to the editors by July 27, 2020.
6) Publication: “Fuori Luogo” Special Issue September 2020.

La recente epidemia di Coronavirus (COVID 2019) che sta colpendo diverse aree geografiche del mondo spinge la sociologia a ripensare i fenomeni di cambiamento sociale. La società in rete ha accelerato, in un breve lasso di tempo, la velocità di diffusione di rischi e disastri tale che gli albori del XXI secolo sono stati caratterizzati da crisi globali con caratteristiche inedite per la storia dell’umanità: gli attentati terroristici dell’11 settembre 2001, il maremoto nell’Oceano indiano del 2004, la recessione economica degli anni 2007-2013 fino ai tre grandi focolai sanitari (“SARS” 2003, Cina continentale, “Swine flu” 2009, Mexico e USA, “MERS” 2012, Arabia Saudita e 2015 in Sud Corea). La pandemia COVID19 ha sorpreso stati, popolazioni e decisori politici, tutti impreparati a fronteggiare un’emergenza che in tempi brevissimi ha di fatto bloccato l’economia, sospeso lo scambio sociale, evidenziato diseguaglianze sociali, obbligato alla distanza sociale e, di conseguenza, ad un uso più diffuso e capillare delle tecnologie di comunicazione digitale.
Questa speciale call for paper “Rischio globale e distanza sociale ai tempi di epidemie e pandemie ai tempi del COVID-19” ospita contributi che offrono approfondimenti e riflessioni in merito all’analisi dei rischi e dei disastri sociali in termini di gestione, resilienza ed elaborazione di politiche, azioni, risposte culturali delle società su scala internazionale, nazionale o locale.
L’invito è a presentare contributi riflessivi sull’impatto di COVID-19 (in parte, ma non solo) e sui cambiamenti che potremmo aspettarci di vedere in futuro. Come rivista sociologica, la nostra riflessione non insiste sullo sviluppo di trattamenti medici, ma piuttosto sulle implicazioni sociali e culturali di un momento senza precedenti o di quelli che abbiamo già vissuto negli ultimi venti anni. Siamo interessati a ricevere riflessioni teoriche, ricerche empiriche o anche (più brevi) commenti teorici e critici sul presente o sulle implicazioni future di questo disastro e di altri disastri sociali. I contributi possono provenire da qualsiasi disciplina delle scienze sociali o umanistiche e sono gradite le riflessioni interdisciplinari.
I paper, in lingua inglese o italiana, dovranno essere caricati attraverso l’apposita sezione della rivista presente sul sito web. Si potranno sottoporre o articoli lunghi (6000-8000 parole, riferimenti bibliografici esclusi) o articoli brevi/commenti/riflessioni scientifiche (3000-4000 parole, riferimenti bibliografici inclusi).
